The War to End All Wars
It all started when Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, in June of 1914.
An escalation of threats and mobilization orders followed the incident, leading to the outbreak of World War 1 in mid - August.
Germany, Austria - Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire (The Central Powers) fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States (joined in 1917 when Russia left), who made up the Allied Powers.
By the time the war ended in November 1918 with the defeat of the Central Powers, more than 9 million soldiers were killed with another 21 million wounded.
